Air
London's largest and primary airport is Heathrow Airport (LHR),
24 km west of central London. The frequent Heathrow Express train
service to Paddington station takes 15 minutes. The airport is also
on the Piccadilly underground line. Bus services include the Airbus
Heathrow Shuttle to Victoria or King's Cross train stations. The
N97 night-bus service travels to central London every half an hour.
Taxis are also available from the airport to the city center.
The second busiest airport,
the Gatwick Airport (LGW), is 45 km south of central London.
The 24-hour Gatwick Express train service to Victoria station takes
30 minutes. There are also alternative services provided by
Thameslink to King's Cross station which take 40 minutes, Speedlink
provides coaches to Heathrow airport, and Flightlink go to Victoria
coach station and National Express to destinations nationwide depart
from the ground floor of the south terminal. Driving time from
Gatwick airport to central London generally takes one hour and 30
minutes.
The modern Stansted
Airport (STN) is serviced by flights to and from many major
European cities. It is located 48 km northeast of central London.
The Stanstead Express offers rail service to Liverpool Street
station. The journey is 45 minutes. There are also coach services
to Victoria Coach Station, Heathrow and Gatwick airports and
national destinations.
Train
There are eight train stations in London, and each station's
location in the city matches the part of the country it serves.
Several trains from every part of the country leave for London
daily. The main station here is the Victoria Train Station
(not to be confused with Victoria Coach Station).
Bus
The largest coach operator in Britain is the National Express.
It is fast and comfortable, with most services depart from
Victoria Coach Station. Tickets can be bought from the
Victoria, Heathrow, or Gatwick coach stations by phone with a credit
card, via the National Express Web Site, or from travel agencies.
Traveling midweek is cheaper than over weekends and at holiday
periods.
