HISTORY London's old name was Londinium, and it was the
Roman's principal post on Britannia. The city was founded in 50 AD
on the north bank of the River Thames. After the Roman Empire
collapsed, a Saxon town was established in its place. During the
late 9th or 10th century, the Roman resumed its occupation of London
before it became England's largest city and subsequently the
country's capital in the 12th century. In 1666, the Great Fire of
London destroyed the large part of the city and reconstruction took
over a decade to complete. London experienced a rapid growth in the
18th century, endorsed by the burst of the Industrial Revolution
that by the early 19th century it became the world's largest city.
After having recovered from the result of WWII, today London is
still going strong as one of the world's most fascinating and
